Retwist Aftercare: First 48 Hours After the SkyLocs Signature Retwist Course

By SkyLocs | September 10, 2026

My biggest rule after the SkyLocs Signature Retwist Course, especially here in Indianapolis, is simple: keep your locs dry and calm for 48 hours. That means no washing, no swimming, and no workouts that leave your scalp soaked. This course is hands-on, so you’re leaving with a fresh retwist and new technique. The first two days are where you protect that neat foundation and keep frizz from taking over.

Quick context: The Signature Retwist Course is a 240-minute training class where I teach clean parting, tension control, product use, assessment, styling, aftercare, and pricing. You also leave with course materials and a Certificate of Completion. The aftercare below helps your retwist stay crisp while you’re practicing what you learned.

The first 24 to 48 hours: keep the retwist set, not swollen

Right after a retwist, your goal is to let the hair stay in place long enough to “set.” In Indianapolis, summer heat and humidity can loosen a fresh retwist fast, so these two days matter even more than you think.

Do this

  • Keep your scalp dry. No washing and no soaking your hair in the shower.
  • Keep styles low tension. If you put it up, go for a loose, low bun or a loose ponytail that doesn’t pull at your edges.
  • Protect at night. Sleep in a satin scarf or use a satin pillowcase so your retwist doesn’t get roughed up by cotton.
  • If your scalp feels dry, use a small amount of light oil like jojoba or grapeseed, then leave it alone.

Skip this

  • Heavy sweating (hot yoga, long runs, heavy lifting sessions that drench your scalp).
  • Steam rooms and saunas. Moisture plus heat equals quicker puffing and frizz.
  • Direct sun for long stretches. Heat can make the scalp more reactive and the hair swell.
  • Swimming. Chlorine and lake water can dry you out and disturb the retwist.

If you get wet or sweat anyway: Pat, don’t rub. Blot your scalp and locs gently with a towel, then let everything air-dry fully before you tie it up or put on a scarf. Rubbing is what turns a neat retwist into fuzzy roots.

Days 3 to 7: what keeps your roots fresh (and what unravels them)

Once you’re past that first 48-hour window, most people feel more comfortable styling again. Just remember, your roots are still “new.” The habits you pick this week are the habits your locs respond to long-term.

Keep doing

  • Keep your night protection consistent. Satin is your best friend for frizz control.
  • Watch your hands. Twisting, picking, and constant scalp scratching can loosen the roots fast.
  • If you’re practicing your new retwist skills, focus on clean parting and gentle tension. That’s what gives you that “fresh” look that lasts.
  • Stay mindful with humidity. Indianapolis summers will test a retwist. Keep a scarf in the car for quick coverage if you’re stepping out into heat and moisture for a while.

Avoid this week

  • Tight updos, tight ponytails, and anything pulling at your hairline.
  • Heavy product layering. Build-up at the root makes your retwist look dull and can create flaking.
  • Trying to “fix” unevenness by over-twisting. If something looks off, I’d rather you ask than create tension you don’t need.

Products that help your loc retwist care, and the ones I don’t want near your roots

If your retwist looks great when you leave and gets puffy days later, products are often part of the story. I keep it simple because simple tends to stay clean.

Use sparingly

  • Light, residue-free oils on the scalp only if needed (jojoba or grapeseed are solid choices).
  • A residue-free cleanser when it’s time to wash again. Clean scalp, clean roots.
  • Water-based spritzes are fine if you’re dry, but keep it light. Drenching your roots is what I’m trying to prevent early on.

Avoid for now

  • Heavy waxes and thick pomades that sit on the hair and trap lint.
  • Gels that flake. Flaking looks like “dandruff, ” but it’s often just product breakdown.
  • Anything that makes your roots feel sticky. Sticky equals build-up, and build-up makes retwists look older faster.

Swimming, pool days, and Indianapolis humidity: keep your retwist neat anyway

People ask me about retwist and humidity all the time because our Indianapolis summers do not play. Moisture in the air can make the hair swell, and that’s when roots start to look fuzzy sooner than you’d like.

If you’re going to the pool

  • If you can, avoid getting your locs wet during the first 48 hours.
  • Cover up with a swim cap or keep your hair up and away from splashing.
  • Afterward, if your hair got damp, blot gently and let it dry fully before you wrap it or tie it down.

East Side tip: If you’re commuting around the 56th Street corridor near Emerson and Keystone East, keep a satin scarf in your bag. It’s a fast fix when humidity hits and you want to protect your roots on the go.

If something feels off, reach out early (I’d rather fix it than let you stress)

A little scalp tenderness can be normal right after a retwist, especially if you’re not used to the feeling. What I don’t want you to push through is sharp pain, lasting irritation, or sections that look clearly uneven in a way that’s getting worse.

If you notice tightness, irritation, or uneven locs within the first week, let me know. SkyLocs is on the East Side near the 56th Street corridor, and it’s an easy stop if you’re coming along I-465. I see people drive in from Lawrence, Broad Ripple, Castleton, Irvington, and Meridian-Kessler for maintenance and follow-ups, so you’re not the only one making the trip.
