I hear it all the time: people love the way I take care of their hair, especially the shampooing, and they want to keep that “fresh, healthy locs” feeling going at home. Your number one rule for the first 48 hours after a Loc Shampoo and Hydration Treatment, No Retwist is simple: keep your locs fully dry and hands-off. No tight styling, no heavy sweating, and no extra manipulation. In Indianapolis, that matters even more because humidity can keep dampness trapped, and that’s where odor and mildew problems usually start.
First 24–48 hours: dry-first rules that prevent odor and puffiness
Quick rule: If your scalp or locs still feel cool or damp, they’re not dry yet. Keep drying.
This service is 45 minutes for a reason. I’m layering a three-step shampoo, deep conditioning, a hot oil treatment, and steam therapy to get moisture back into the hair without leaving you with a retwist. That “no retwist” part is exactly why aftercare matters. Your roots are free, so friction and moisture can show up fast if you don’t protect the result.
How I want you to dry your locs
- Blot, don’t rub. Use a microfiber towel or a soft cotton t-shirt and press water out section by section.
- Let them air-dry as much as you can first. Then use a hood dryer or diffuser on cool or low heat to finish.
- Lift and separate layers while drying so the middle and the back dry too. Trapped moisture is usually the problem area.
For the first 48 hours, skip anything that makes you sweat heavily. If you have to work out, keep it light and plan to dry your scalp right after. In August humidity in Indianapolis, I’m extra serious about this because it’s easy to think you’re “mostly dry” when you’re not.
Also, don’t retwist, palm roll, pick, or “neaten up” your roots right now. You’re protecting the clean, hydrated feel, and you’re preventing frizz from getting locked in.
Days 3–7: no retwist loc care that keeps you looking fresh
A lot of people tell me their “hair was very happy after the treatment, ” and I want that to stay true all week. This is the stretch where buildup and lint usually sneak in, especially if you’re busy and your hair is down, rubbing on hoodies, car headrests, and backpacks.
Keep it low-maintenance on purpose
- Choose loose, low-tension styles. A soft pony, loose braid-out, or just leaving them down is usually best right after a no-retwist cleanse.
- If you notice two locs “sticking, ” separate them gently with your fingers. Don’t pull hard, and don’t force it if it’s snagging.
- If your scalp gets a little dry, use a light mist, then let it dry. Don’t drench your roots.
Parents and commuters tell me they need hair that stays easy between school runs, work commutes on I-465, and weekend plans. This is that week. Keep your hands out of your locs and your routine simple, and you’ll usually keep that clean look longer.
Product picks after hydration treatment: what to use (and what to skip)
After a hydration-focused wash, your products should protect the work, not cover it up. I keep it simple because heavy products are one of the fastest ways to dull that clean, moisturized finish.
Go for light, clean layers
- A lightweight leave-in hydration spray or mist (think: adds slip, not grease).
- A few drops of light oil on the scalp if you need it, not a soak.
- Residue-free, sulfate-free cleanser when it’s time to wash again.
Skip these this week
- Heavy butters and thick creams that sit on the loc and collect lint.
- Gels and edge controls at the root. They can flake and trap residue.
- Anything sticky that makes you feel like you have to “scrub it out” later.
At night, protect your result. A satin bonnet or satin pillowcase cuts down frizz and keeps your locs from drying out.
Swimming, hot tubs, and sweating: straight answers for Indianapolis summers
If you’re asking, “Can I swim after loc shampoo?” my answer is: give it 48–72 hours before pools, hot tubs, or the ocean. Chlorine, salt, and heat can throw off the clean feel fast, and it’s harder to dry thoroughly after.
- If you must swim: rinse with fresh water right after, then plan a clarifying wash within 24 hours.
- If you’re working out: keep it light the first day, wipe your scalp after, and dry the roots. Sweat that sits can start odor.
- If you’re in a rush: low heat is fine. High heat plus aggressive rubbing is where frizz and dryness tend to show up.
Indy tip: In August humidity, plan extra drying time. If the inside of your locs stays damp, that’s when that “musty” smell can pop up.
When to text me and when to come back in: follow-ups along East 56th Street
I’m big on education and clean, professional care because I want your locs healthy long-term, not just for the next couple days. People stick with me for years for a reason, and I take that trust seriously.
"I have trusted Sky with my hair for 3 years now! When you find a good loctitian, you stick with them. My locs are happy and healthy, thanks to her amazing steam treatments and products."

Normal vs. “let’s fix this now”
- Normal: a little frizz at the roots, a lighter feel, and locs that move more since we didn’t retwist.
- Reach out: you smell mildew, your locs stay damp for hours, or you have scalp irritation that doesn’t calm down.
- Come in sooner: you swam earlier than planned or you had a sweaty day and now things feel sticky or off.
If you’re coming from Lawrence, Broad Ripple, Castleton, Irvington, or Meridian-Kessler, I’m an easy stop on the East Side near the 56th Street corridor (Emerson and Keystone East). If something doesn’t feel right, don’t sit with it. Message me and I’ll tell you the next best step.
Rebook timing: If you’re planning a retwist, I usually like you to wait at least a week after this treatment so your hair can settle and you’re not over-manipulating.
This treatment is $65 and takes 45 minutes. If you want to keep that clean, hydrated look on repeat, we’ll set you up with a rhythm that fits your hair and your schedule.
